Cestrum nocturnum Night jessamine, queen of the night. Both are known as nichtolouloudo
Cestrum spp is one of the many night-scented blooms in Greece that go by the name of nichtoloulouda, or night flowers. However, these two particularly deserve the moniker. As you drive along with open windows, you can feel wafts of intense perfume filling the night air in the villages and towns of Greece during the summer months.

Your column of 4 December 2009, To prune or not to prune, shows photographs of a tree with a yellow fungus. I have a walnut tree with the same fungus, which is also spreading to my olive trees. Can you tell me what this fungus is and how dangerous is it to the life of the tree? I was advised last spring to spray with ‘copper’ and was given a blue powder, which I think is copper sulphate. I pruned some limbs of the walnut and sprayed twice. Some of the fungus can now be brushed off, but a lot remains.

These rather charming, small, solitary insects cut chunks out of leaves in the process of diligently making nests in which to lay their dozen or so eggs that will hatch out and disperse next June.
