New Year’s Event by the British Embassy and the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce
Athens, 24 February 2022.The well-established annual joint “New Year’s Reception” of the British Embassy in Athens and the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce took place, in a hybrid way, at the British Residence in Athens.
Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of State and Digital Governance, participated in the event as a keynote speaker.
Τhe British Ambassador to Greece Matthew Lodge in his welcome speech highlighted: “The companies that are members of the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce have traditionally, over the years, served as a bridge between the two countries and their economies. They are the first to identify the opportunities as well as the challenges. The Chamber, as an institution, and we, here at the Embassy, wish to play an active part in finding the solutions to problems and expanding collaborations. Internationally, we find ourselves in a special and demanding situation. Yet our shared history and potential can drive growth and prosperity for us all”.
Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis in his keynote speech stated: “In a constantly evolving world, Greece has the ability to innovate by adopting best practices from countries with significant know-how, such as the UK. The excellent collaboration between our two countries’ officials and executives in both the public and private sectors and the collaborative teamwork of all, makes this possible. I congratulate the British Embassy and the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce for today’s event. It is a pleasure to be here with you as the gov.uk website inspired us in developing our gov.gr website. The challenge of “the day after” requires synergies and open horizons. From our perspective, we encourage innovative and pioneering solutions with regards to the digital transformation of the country”.
In her turn, Ms Anna Kalliani, Greek President of the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce shared her wishes for 2022 and pointed out the remarkable structural reforms the Greek government implements, towards digitization, green development and the creation of a modern productive model for the country. She underlined, however, that international geopolitical challenges, constantly rising energy prices and inflation, and the consequent “turbulence” in supply chains, are challenges that need to be addressed and mitigated.
Referring to Greek-British relationship, she mentioned that the recent signing of the Strategic Bilateral Framework between Greece and the United Kingdom confirms the close relationship between the two countries and indicates their commitment to further strengthening traditionally strong ties at various levels such as foreign policy & defense, investments, educational relationships. She also noted that the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce continues to contribute dynamically towards this direction and supports the further enhancement of investments.
Mr Kenny Evangelou, British President of the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, welcomed guests and thanked all sponsors of the event. He also noted the importance of the continuation and acceleration of the economic recovery and increase of foreign direct investments in Greece by British companies, as well as from businesses from all over the world. He added that the support of funds from the Hellenic Recovery Fund can be a catalyst, while he stressed his belief that there will be increased investment opportunities in various business sectors. In this context, the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce has planned a series of events and initiatives covering the most important industries of the Greek economy.
Senior executives of Energean and GlaxoSmithkline, which were among the major Sponsor-companies of the event, addressed live from the British Embassy their messages and New Year wishes.
